Abstract:

This invention introduces a novel method for encapsulating active compounds, such as bioactive molecules (e.g., retinol), within whey protein - lactoglobulin (BLG), whereby the compound is molecularly bound inside the protein’s three-dimensional structure to form a stable solid product. Analytical techniques including mass spectrometry and X-ray crystallography confirm the molecular stabilization of the active compound inside the solid matrix.

Background:

Traditional encapsulation methods often fail to preserve the molecular integrity of sensitive compounds during processing and storage. This invention introduces a double encapsulation approach where whey protein acts as both molecular and supramolecular scaffold, providing superior protection against degradation through dehydration and rehydration cycles.

Benefits:

Superior molecular protection of active compounds; Stable solid product for easier handling and longer storage; Enhanced efficacy by preserving molecular integrity; Applicability across pharmaceutical, food, and cosmetic industries; Potential use in drug support, hydrophobic vitamins and antioxidants.

Potential comercial use/applications:

Suitable for development into functional products such as pharmaceuticals, dietary supplements, and cosmetics. The formulation improves stability and bioavailability of vitamins, polyphenols, and other hydrophobic bioactive compounds, meeting market needs in health, nutrition, and wellness sectors.
