Abstract:

The intelligent device can provide continuous control light entry from total transparency to total darkness. It can be used as a solar panel or heat exchanger allowing the increase of energy efficiency in buildings.

Background:

Other patent-protected systems can’t provide a progressive control of light, nor collect energy from the environment. The classic solar panels are difficult to adapt to many architectural situations. In apartment buildings, the installation of panels on roof imposes long distance circuits and poor efficiency. The installation of Venetians or curtains is expensive. The smart window replaces all these systems.

Benefits:

This system is composed by two parallel framed glasses. One of the glasses can be moved changing the gap between them. A coloured liquid can be introduced inside the gap providing a fading effect of the external light. An easy vacuum system can provide total transparency or total darkness. The pressure in the vacuum system provides a continuous control of light and can also compensate the bottom pressure on large windows.
The fluid can be used to transfer heat to an exchanger, when the device is used as a classic solar panel or connected to a heat pump. The smart window can:

provide continuous and uniform (automatic) control of light;

increase energy efficiency of buildings, working as solar panel;

be  connected to a heat pump providing heat exchange with environment 24 h/day, all year round;

avoid Venetians and curtains;

provide very good thermal and acoustic insulation.

Potential comercial use/applications:

As window or doorways in residences, flats and office buildings. As skylight, they can control light and heat swimming pool water or commercial centres, and when connected to a cooling system can provide air conditioning.
